Barranco Blanco – Coin

Those who love nature and adventure should definitely seek out Barranco Blanco in the area. Barranco Blanco in Coin is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the province of Malaga.
If there is one place with crystal clear water, white stones and lush vegetation, it is Barranco Blanco. Where the Alaminos River is home to otters and barbel, willows and honeysuckle.
We must approach the area calmly to avoid disturbing the balance. This river, permanently flowing, is the main tributary of the Fuengirola River. We are in a natural paradise between Alhaurin El Grande and Coin. The water begins its journey underground and comes to the surface when it comes in contact with peridotite, the strange magmatic rock. It is La Fuente (The Spring).
In the summer months, you may only park 45 walking minutes away. But what you then encounter is an earthly paradise. An ever-flowing river in the interior between Coín and Alhaurin el Grande. A beautiful footpath, which in some places you can only cross while swimming.
It is hidden on the road from Alhaurin el Grande to Coin (at BP station towards Coín/Marbella). Near mile marker 4, turn left. From your parking spot, continue walking until you reach the yellow sign and then walk into the forest. You will automatically hear the river that you can follow for miles upstream. If you want to see the high waterfall, you need to descend to the left before entering the forest. Despite the recently attached descent chains, it is a “tricky” descent, so proceed with caution. If you reach the bottom of the waterfall, you may experience a “Palmolive moment” as the waterfall once featured in an advertisement by the shampoo brand, with the model showering under the cold waterfall….brrrr…

The best time to do this hike is in summer because although the river water is clean and transparent, it is quite cold.

Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunscreen, water and something to eat, and keep in mind to bring a waterproof bag/bag for dry transfer of your phone or other items that should not get wet. By the way, cell phone coverage will be poor, so live coverage on Facebook is probably not an option 😉

Note: Water shoes definitely recommended!
